Chicago Blackhawks Drake Caggiula Enters Concussion Protocol

Drake Caggiula

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that forward Drake Caggiula has entered concussion protocol. More updates will come as he progresses.

Drake Caggiula Hits Chicago’s Injury Report

Chicago’s front office placed Caggiula in the concussion protocol on Wednesday morning. He initially just appeared to be ill but further investigation led the team to believe he has a concussion.

This is not the first time in his career Caggiula has had a concussion. Back in February, he missed 13 games after suffering the injury against the Anaheim Ducks. With four points so far this season, he was being tested out on Chicago’s top line. Following the injury, Chicago’s top line should feature Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Strome, and star wing, Patrick Kane.

Caggiula is in his fourth NHL season and his second with the Chicago Blackhawks. The young forward was undrafted out of the University of North Dakota. He would eventually sign a two-year entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers. Making his debut in 2016, Caggiula would play in 60 games and score seven goals and 11 assists as a rookie. He continued his tenure in Edmonton for three more seasons, before being traded to Chicago.

Since joining the Blackhawks organization in December of 2018, Caggiula has played in a total of 41 games for Chicago. With 16 points in those 41 games, he has not lived up to the potential shown during his college career. However, he remains an important piece of the offensive group for Chicago.

Other Injury News in Chicago

Although the injury to Caggiula hurts for the Blackhawks, they have other, more positive news on the injury front. Connor Murphy is on track to return to the lineup on Saturday, following the re-aggravation of a groin injury near the end of October. There was also a concern for Corey Crawford after he hyper-extended his left leg. Crawford took himself out of the net but was able to finish practice with the team. He is in net Wednesday.
