Andy Greene Headed to IR
Greene was initially listed as day to day with his current injury prior to New Jersey’s game against the Edmonton Oilers this past Thursday.
To fill Greene’s roster spot in the meantime, the Devils have called Matt Tennyson up from Binghamton. He will meet the team in Massachusetts for the Devil’s matchup with the Boston Bruins Saturday night. Greene had been playing alongside Damon Severson on the second defensive pairing. Expect to see Severson moved up to the first pair alongside P.K. Subban for the time being.
Greene’s Value
Greene has been the captain of New Jersey for the last five seasons. Greene’s value to the team comes on the defensive end of the ice. Since taking over the captaincy, he has 64 points in 314 games.
This Devil’s team needs Greene back on the ice sooner rather than later. While it is still early in the season, New Jersey currently sits in the last place in the Metropolitan Division with an 0-2-2 record. In those four games, they have given up 20 goals. If this team hopes to rise to the top in the Metro, they need a serious defensive boost. Losing Greene won’t help them in this situation.
How the Devil’s Will Fill the Gap
While the team has called up 29-year-old defenceman Matt Tennyson, he will not be of great value to the team. After signing with the San Jose Sharks in 2012 after going undrafted, he has played parts of several seasons also with the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres. Tennyson has played in 124 career games, but only has a meagre 20 points.
Hopefully, for New Jersey, Andy Greene will return to the lineup in the near future. In the meantime, they will face a 3-1-0 Boston Bruins team that is playing their first home game after a four-game road trip to start the season.
