Arizona Coyotes Re-sign Darcy Kuemper

Darcy Kuemper

Last year’s star sensation in between the pipes for the Arizona Coyotes, Darcy Kuemper has agreed to a two-year extension valued at an AAV of $4.5 million per Elliotte Friedman.

Last season Kuemper accumulated some excellent numbers and almost single-handedily directed the Coyotes to the playoffs, falling short by just four points. He collected a 27-20-8 record. He had a very stellar .925 save percentage to go along with a 2.33 goals against average.

It goes without saying that when Antti Raanta went down with a season-ending lower body injury the net belonged to Kuemper. He also had five shutouts to add to his resume.

What This Means Going Forward

It appears that Kuemper showed his worth by playing so well last season, and deserved a contract renewal. With Raanta’s unreliable status with injuries, Kuemper will be the man. He now earns more than Raanta by $250,000, but the important key is that Kuemper should be the number-one starting goalie. It would be more than necessary for Raanta to get back into the swing of things but he seems to plagued with injury issues.

Just to be safe the Coyotes claimed goalie Eric Comrie off of waivers from the Winnipeg Jets. He is signed to a reasonable $700,000 contract through the 2020-21 season. The team also has some depth with two qualified goalies in their AHL affiliate in Tucson. They have Adin Hill, Ivan Prosvetov, and Merrick Madsen all prepared to attempt to make the big club in Arizona.

The Coyotes have some goalie depth and feel even if Raanta doesn’t snap out of his injury issues, they have a good set of netminders in their system to supplement Kuemper and give him a night off every so often.
