The New York Rangers signed free agent defenceman Anthony DeAngelo to a one-year contract worth $925,000. This contract carries him through the 2019-20 season after which he will again become a restricted free agent. He had turned down a qualifying offer from the team for $874,125, and became a holdout until things were finally settled.

Anthony DeAngelo Signs With the New York Rangers
Over his three-year NHL career DeAngelo has played for the New York Rangers, and the Arizona Coyotes. He has put up nine goals and 43 assists for 52 career points in 132 career games. He was originally drafted in the first round, 19th overall of the 2014 NHL draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Last season he scored four goals and 26 assists for 30 points in 61 games. He also added 77 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 46.3 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 1.7.
DeAngleo has had his moments of playing like a first-round draft pick but then his choices at times are questionable. Putting up 30 points last season shows he can play if he stays focused. There are times where he takes less than emotionally intelligent penalties which can hurt his team.
What This Means for the Future
DeAngelo can certainly be a good bottom-six defenceman and has shown the Rangers that he belongs on the roster. It took some time to sign him as the team has had salary cap issues which seem to be running rampant in the NHL.
If he can show the Rangers management and coaching staff that he is committed to staying with them, then his future can be bright. What he needs more than anything is to play tough, but not wild. His temperament is what it is, yet in the NHL you must control how you hit someone or when to stand up for your teammates.
He averaged 19:20 of playing time last season and that indicates that they want him to step up and be a good D-man for the organization.
