Ottawa Senators Sign Thomas Chabot To Eight Year Extension

On Thursday morning, the Ottawa Senators announced they signed defenceman Thomas Chabot to an eight-year contract extension worth, $64 million. His deal will carry an average annual value of $8 million.

Senators Sign Thomas Chabot

Chabot was drafted 18th overall in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft. Since then he has made an impact for the Senators. In two full seasons in the league, Chabot has already established himself as one of the best young defensemen out there. Despite Ottawa’s struggles during the 2018-19 season, Chabot set new personal records in every statistical category. In 70 games last season, he recorded 55 points (14 goals and 41 assists). He also led the team with time on ice at 24:17. Not to mention he was lone the representative from the Senators at the 64th NHL All-Star Game. Chabot also set a franchise record for points by a defenceman in his first 100 games with the franchise with 62.

Steps Forward

The Chabot signing is a step in the right direction for the Senators organization. Considering how many big stars the team has let walk over the past decade, this helps the Senators build a young nucleus. With Chabot taking over the reins from Erik Karlsson on the blue line, Senators fans have something to be excited about.

Chabot joins fellow teammate and 2015 first-round draft pick (21st overall) Colin White in committing to the Senators long-term. The Senators have a lot to look forward to this season. Chabot and White are just two of the young players to keep an eye on this season. Not to mention Brady Tkachuk, who is the next player the Senators hope to lock up long-term.

While it may feel like a lifetime ago when the Senators were a goal away from going to the Stanley Cup Final, things are moving in a positive direction.
