The Dallas Stars have signed free agent winger Scottie Upshall to a professional tryout. Upshall was given a PTO last year by the Edmonton Oilers but was later released.

Scottie Upshall Signs PTO with Dallas Stars
Over his 15-year NHL career, Upshall has played for the Nashville Predators, Florida Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers, Arizona Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets and most recently the St.Louis Blues. He has put up 138 goals and 146 assists for 284 career points in 759 career games. He was originally drafted sixth overall of the 2002 NHL Draft by the Predators.
Upshall’s last played in the NHL during the 2017-18 season for the Blues. That year he put up seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 63 games. He also added 46 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 47.1 percent Corsi with a relative Corsi of -5.1.
What This Means for the Future
This move doesn’t come as a surprise as the Stars currently have only 13 forwards signed to contracts. The Alberta native Upshall will look to make an NHL return this season with the Dallas Stars. If Upshall is able to make the team out of camp he would provide some veteran depth for the Stars heading into next season. The Stars finished last season 29th in the league in goals-for and could be looking for some more offense up front. He would also be able to contribute to the penalty kill and could possibly see time on the second PK unit for the Stars. It will be interesting to see if things pan out for Upshall and the Stars during training camp. The 35-year-old Upshall missed last season with various injury-related issues. This new PTO will be his chance to show that, despite injury and age, he still has what it takes to make an NHL roster.
