The Calgary Flames have re-signed center/winger Sam Bennett to a 2-year contract worth $5.1 million, or $2.55 million per season. This contract carries him through the 2020-21 season.

Sam Bennett Signs With the Flames

The fourth overall pick of the Flames in 2014 has spent his entire career in Calgary. He has put up 55 goals and 61 assists for 116 career points in 312 career games. Bennett has six goals and five assists for 11 points in 20 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Last season he scored 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points. He also added 93 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 53.5 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -0.2. Bennett added a goal and four assists for five points in five games during the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Those numbers would lead the Flames in points during their first-round loss to the Colorado Avalanche.

What This Means for the Future

Bringing back Sam Bennett for Calgary brings back one of their top six forwards from last season. In Bennett, you can expect a guy who will pick up 10-15 goals a season. With Bennett on the back in the lineup it provides more depth for the Flames offence, with guys like Elias Lindholm and Matthew Tkachuk playing on the first and second line.

Bennett has proven to be a strong piece for the Flames during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He led the team this year in points during the Stanley Cup Playoffs and was second in that category during the Flames run in 2015. The Flames can continue to expect solid production from Benett in the regular season but he has shown that he can really perform during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. This will be key for a young Calgary team that has made the playoffs twice in the past three seasons.
