Haydn Fleury Re-Signs With Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes have re-signed free-agent defenceman Haydn Fleury to a 1-year contract worth $850,000 million. This contract carries him through the 2019-20 season.

Haydn Fleury Signs With the Hurricanes

Over his 2-year NHL career Fleury has played exclusively for the Hurricanes. He has put up 0 goals and 9 assists for 9 career points in 87 career games. He was originally drafted in the 1st round, 7th overall of the 2014 NHL draft by Carolina.

Last season he scored 0 goals and 1 assist for 1 point in 20 games. He also added 2 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 51.3 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -2.8.

“Haydn has taken strides during each of his three professional seasons in our organization,” said Waddell. “We’ve been encouraged by his development and our hope is that he becomes a fixture in our lineup.”

What This Means for the Future

Fleury is still a young piece for the Hurricanes organization. While he hasn’t stuck it full time in the NHL yet, he was a core piece of the Charlotte Checkers Calder Cup run. With the trade of Calvin de Haan this opens up the opportunity for Fleury to get into the NHL full time, and potentially play with a great D partner with Carolina’s incredibly deep defense. Playing beside any of their defense would put Haydn Fleury in a great position to succeed.

Fleury has not lived up to the pedigree of being a 7th overall pick yet, however, at only the age of 23 he still has the potential to develop into a regular NHLer. Appearing in 9 playoff games in the NHL last season and posting 6 points in 11 AHL games, he played lots of extra hockey this spring. He will be looking to make the Hurricanes out of camp this season.
