Ray Shero Gets Multi-Year Extension.
This season, the Devils had a record of 31-41-10 and finished in last place of the Metropolitan Division.
Shero joined the Devils as their GM in 2015, and the team has only made the playoffs once since he took over. One of the biggest moves Shero has made as GM is bringing in Taylor Hall from the Edmonton Oilers. Hall has 70 goals and 113 assists for 183 points in 181 games with New Jersey.
Shero also extended head coach John Hynes earlier this season, locking him up to a multi-year deal to stay with the team.
What This Means for the Team’s Future
In a press conference today Shero said that he is looking to bring more talent to New Jersey. This doesn’t come as a surprise as the Devils lost in the first round last year and failed to make the playoffs this year. Besides Hall, the Devils also have Kyle Palmieri who put up 27 goals last season.
Some of the bigger names hitting free agency this season are Matt Duchene and Artemi Panarin. It would be a shock if the Devils landed one of these superstars in the off-season, but the Devils will more than likely take a run at these higher end players. The Devils first order of business, however, will be extending Taylor Hall in the off-season.
The Devils finished 29th in the NHL this season which could land them a top three pick in this year’s draft. This would be huge for the Devils as they could add another young superstar to their core. The Devils were awarded the first pick in the 2017 NHL draft and ended up drafting Nico Hischier.
