The Carolina Hurricanes have lost defenceman Calvin de Haan due to a seemingly arm injury. Calvin de Haan suffered his upper-body injury in an awkward collision with Jake Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins. De Haan went down near the boards, apparently injuring either his shoulder or wrist. He left the ice in a lot of pain after that fall. His status is yet to be determined, but it is not looking good according to the head coach Rod Brind’Amour.

Calvin de Haan Injured After Scary Looking Collision
Calvin de Haan has become a very reliable defensive part of the Carolina Hurricanes’ team chasing the playoff spot. The 27-year-old defenceman signed a four-year deal worth $4.55 million per season last summer in Carolina as a free agent. So far this season, he has played in 74 games. He has recorded one goal and 13 assists for 14 points in those contests. De Haan is averaging 18:31 of the ice-time and 55.5 of CF%.
De Haan already had to miss five games with a facial injury suffered on March 11 in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche. Last season Calvin de Haan could not play in a total of 49 games because of a left shoulder injury. It appears that he injured the same area again.
Carolina Hurricanes Buckle-Up For Playoff Race Without De Haan
The Carolina Hurricanes will most probably have to fight for the playoff spot in the Eastern Conference without the services of Calvin de Haan. “I haven’t talked to the trainers yet, but I think he’s going home, so it’s not good,” said Head coach Rod Brind’Amour after the loss versus the Penguins. De Haan had finished the unsuccessful night for him and his team with ice-time of 7:08. As of late, he was paired with Trevor van Riemsdyk on the third defensive pairing.
What This Means for the Future
The Hurricanes will have to adjust to their loss as they have three games to go in the regular season. Carolina is playing at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday to finish the road trip, before facing the New Jersey Devils on Thursday at home and then the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday on the road. They are hanging on to the second wild-card spot in the East with just a one-point advantage over the ninth-place Montreal Canadiens.
