New York Rangers Extend Boo Nieves, Steven Fogarty

Boo Nieves; New York Rangers Black Aces

Amongst all the chaos that the Trade Deadline brings, the New York Rangers extended the contracts of Boo Nieves and Steven Fogarty. Both extensions are good for one year. The former is worth $700,000 whereas the details on Fogarty’s contract have yet to be released.

New York Rangers Extend Two Players’ Contracts

Jeff Gorton, general manager of the Rangers, has been busy this weekend. All eyes have been on the recent trades of Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes. However, Rangers fans can breath easy as two key depth forwards are sticking around for another year. Boo Nieves and Steven Fogarty usually play in the AHL. Nevertheless, they still have important roles in New York when the time comes.

Key Players

Boo Nieves has had his share with both the Rangers and Hartford Wolf Pack. This year, he boasts an identical stat line with three goals and five assists for eight points. However, for the first time in his three year career, he’s spent more games with New York, a total of 29 games. Nieves has been present for only 16 games in the minors.

While he’s been one of Hartford’s best players, the 25-year-old center provides great insurance to the Rangers. Oftentimes he’s relied on as a callup when a Blueshirt gets injured. This season has seen more consistent stints in the NHL for Nieves. As his spot as a fourth line center becomes solidified, more and more roster spots keep opening up. The Upstate New York native will likely be a mainstay for the remainder of this year.

Steven Fogarty’s role is very similar to Nieves. While the Notre Dame alumn has spent 10 games with the Rangers this season, he’s often been kept with Hartford. Nevertheless, he’s managed an impressive 17 goals, 22 assists, for 39 points across 47 games with the abysmal Wolf Pack. Despite sitting in last place in the Atlantic Division, the alternate captain manages to put up solid offensive numbers. Fogarty is also 25-years-old but still has time to develop into a more prominent role with the Rangers. As Nieves becomes more of a regular in New York, Fogarty could take his role as the go-to call-up guy.
