The Jets completed a trade Monday with the Rangers. The Jets acquire forward Kevin Hayes in exchange for prospect Brendan Lemieux, a first and a conditional pick.

Key Players

The 2018-19 season saw Kevin Hayes’ best performance yet. The 26-year-old scored 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points, adding 10 minutes in penalties. Those totals are significantly better compared to last season, where he scored 25 goals, 19 assists for 44 points.

Over his five-year NHL career, Hayes has only played for the New York Rangers.  In that time, he has 87 goals and 129 assists for 216 career points in 361 career games. Originally drafted 24th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010, he signed with the Blueshirts as a free agent in 2014 following graduation from Boston College.

What This Means for the Future

For Hayes, it will be the first time he will be playing for someone other than the Rangers. The two sides had been unable to come together on a long-term deal last summer and settled for a one-year deal. Instead of losing Hayes for nothing, the Rangers felt it was best to get a solid return for the 26-year-old.

For the — Hayes has shown to have a scoring touch when on the ice. Before his injury, Hayes had 33 points in 39 games. If he can avoid any more injury trouble, his new team should expect to get a boost in scoring with Hayes in the lineup.

As for Lemieux, the Rangers add a decent prospect. He has had some success in the AHL but hasn’t put it all together in the NHL just yet. However, he hasn’t been given a great role in Winnipeg. Maybe getting some more responsibility in New York could really help his game grow.
