Panthers Trade Chris Wideman to Penguins

Key Players

In Wideman, the Penguins get a bottom-six defenseman with some offensive upside. This season, he scored two goals and five assists for seven points, adding 18 minutes in penalties in 25 games played. His possession numbers are 44.6 percent Corsi-for and a relative Corsi of +1.3. Those totals are worse compared to last season, where he scored three goals, five assists for eight points. Over his four-year NHL career, Wideman has played for the Ottawa SenatorsEdmonton Oilers, and Florida Panthers. In that time, he has 16 goals and 29 assists for 45 career points in 181 career games. He was originally drafted in the fourth round, 100th overall of the 2009 NHL draft by the Senators.

In Dea, the Panthers get a young forward who has less than 30 games under his belt. This season, he scored four goals and two assists for six points, adding eight minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 48.8 percent Corsi-for and a relative Corsi of -2.5. Those totals are better compared to last season, where he scored one goal. Over his three-year NHL career, Dea has played for the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins. In that time, he has five goals and two assists for seven career points in 29 career games.

What This Means for the Future

Wideman joins his third team this season after also playing with Edmonton and Florida this season. With Kris Letang out of the line-up, the Penguins can use Wideman as an extra defenseman moving forward.

Dea gives the Panthers a young player with a chance to make an impact after a change in scenery. The Panthers clear money, continue to get younger and re-build. Moving forward Dea could be a bottom-six forward for the Panthers. He does have the ability to play up the middle but it is likely that he will play on the wing in Florida.
