New Jersey Devils Extend Coach John Hynes
Hynes earned this extension by taking the Devils to the playoffs for the first time since the 2012 playoffs when the team made the Cup Final. Last season the Devils had a 44-29-9 record to carry them to the postseason. Over his 4-year coaching career with the New Jersey Devils, Hynes has a 125-122-38 record.
Currently, the Devils are 10 points outside a wildcard spot and are second last in their division. 15-17-7 through their first 39 games of the season, they are currently two wins below 0.500.
Ray Shero was quoted saying “John is to be commended for the progress the team has made under his direction and this commitment shows that we are confident in the role he will play in our future success.”
What This Means for the Future
John Hynes, along with an MVP performance from Taylor Hall, turned around the Devils from coming 6th last in 2016-17 to a playoff team. Hynes is a coach that management is confident with and one that the players know. With the roster finally looking like it can be a respectable team in the NHL for the first time since 2012, the world will finally be able to see what Hynes is able to do as a coach. While he has an all-time record barely above 0.500 it will be interesting to see what he continues to do with this roster that is filled with speed.
