Chicago Blackhawks Place Jason Garrison on Unconditional Waivers

The Chicago Blackhawks have placed defenseman Jason Garrison on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. Garrison was acquired by the Hawks on Sunday from the Edmonton Oilers. He was part of a 4 player deal that saw Chicago sending defensemen Brandon Manning and Robin Norell to Edmonton for forward Drake Caggiula and Garrison. Garrison signed a one year, $650,000 deal in October with the Oilers. The Hawks will end up paying Garrison $332,000 for the rest of the season.

Jason Garrison Carrer Numbers

This season Garrison has scored one goal in 17 games. He also added eight minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 45.6 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -6.3 percent.

Over his 11-year NHL career, the veteran defenseman has spent time with the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights, and Edmonton Oilers. He has put up 49 goals and 111 assists for 160 career points in 555 career games. He was originally drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round, 95th overall in the 2002 NHL draft.

What This Means for Garrison and the Hawks.

The 11-year defensemen will now become a free agent after having his contract terminated by the Hawks. Garrison spent a majority of last season in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves after being selected by Vegas in the expansion draft. He has played in only 25 NHL games since the beginning of last season. Garrison could look to find a team who is looking for help on the backend. He presents a physical presence on the ice and could help a team who needs more physicality. The Detroit Red Wings could be one team taking a look at Garrison with Trevor Daley out three to five weeks with a broken foot. It will be intriguing to see if Garrison ends up finding a job with an NHL squad

In addition to Garrison, Defenseman Brandon Davidson has also been put on waivers for the purpose of sending him down to the AHL.
