Buffalo Sabres Place Patrik Berglund on Unconditional Waivers

Patrik Berglund

The Buffalo Sabres have placed centre Patrik Berglund on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. Berglund was suspended indefinitely by the Sabres on Saturday for failing to report. He has three years and $9.85 million left on his current contract with the Sabres. $2,235,484 will come off the Sabres cap hit this season as well as $3.85 million in each of the next three years.

Patrik Berglund Let go by the Sabres

In 23 games this year Berglund has two goals and two assists for four points to go along with six minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 48.3 percent Corsi-For with a relative Corsi of -1.5.

Over his 11-year NHL career, Berglund has played for the St. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres. He has 170 goals and 156 assists for 326 career points in 717 career NHL games. The St. Louis Blues drafted Berglund in the first round, 25th overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. He was traded to the Sabres in the off-season, as part of the Ryan O’Reilly deal.

What This Means for the Future

The 10-year veteran will look to join a team once he ends up clearing waivers. Berglund will most likely look to find a team that he will enjoy playing for. Last season Berglund played in only 57 games but still managed to pick up 17 goals along with eight assists. He netted a career-high 23 goals in 82 games in the 2016-17 season. He will bring scoring as well as a big body to a team’s bottom six and will look to center either a third or fourth line. Over the past two seasons, Berglund has been around 55-58 percent on draws which could be a key factor for a team looking to sign him.

Berglund agreed to the contract termination. This is a bit surprising, as, given the way things went in Buffalo, it is unlikely that he will be able to recoup the money he is leaving on the table with this move.
