Penguins Trade Daniel Sprong to Anaheim Ducks

The Pittsburgh Penguins completed a trade Monday with the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks acquire winger Daniel Sprong and in exchange for defensemen Marcus Pettersson.

Key Players

In Prong, the Ducks get a young and talented forward who has not yet been able to produce at the NHL level. Prong put up two consecutive years of 30 goals (and three out of four) while in junior. He also put up 32 goals and 65 points in 65 AHL games last year.

This season, he has four assists for four points. His possession numbers are 45.2 percent Corsi-For and a relative Corsi of -5.6. Those totals are worse compared to last season, where he scored two goals, one assist for three points. Sprong has played parts of three seasons for the Penguins. In that time, he has four goals and five assists for nine career points in 42 career games. He was originally drafted in the second round, 46th overall of the 2015 NHL draft by the Penguins.

In Pettersson, the Penguins acquire a young defenseman. This season, he has six assists in 27 games, adding 17 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 46.5 percent Corsi-For with a relative Corsi of +1.9. These totals are better than last year, where he scored one goal, and three assists for four points. Petterson has spent parts of two seasons for the Anaheim Ducks. In that time he has one goal and nine assists for 10 points in 49 career games. He was originally drafted in the second round, 38th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Ducks.

What This Means for the Future

This trade benefits both teams as it fills needs that they are currently looking to boost. The Pens get a young defenseman to help them out on the blue-line. Pettersson is a solid defender who has a knack for picking up the puck off opponents sticks. The Ducks get a young forward who has shown the ability to score in the AHL and will look to bring that scoring power to the NHL as well.
