Edmonton Oilers Acquire Chris Wideman from Ottawa Senators

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenseman Chris Wideman from the Ottawa Senators. In return, Ottawa receives a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Chris Wideman traded to Edmonton Oilers

The Ottawa Senators traded defenseman Chris Wideman to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday in exchange for a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2020. The Senators will get the pick that the Oilers were set to receive from the St. Louis Blues in an October trade for defenseman Jakub Jerabek.

With Ottawa in the midst of a rebuild, it became increasingly clear that management had lost confidence in Wideman. Currently, he is averaging just 13:33 minutes of ice time. Wideman’s tallied two goals and three assists for five points in 19 games this season.

Wideman has spent his entire NHL career with the Senators. The team drafted him in the fourth round, 100th overall, in the 2009 NHL draft. In 175 games, he owns 16 goals and 27 assists for a total of 43 points.

Wideman is one of the players involved in the controversial Uber video that created a media firestorm for the Senators. Despite the disparaging press, the move seems to be more business related. The defenseman has been a healthy scratch in the past two games and was moving toward a seventh defenseman’s role with the team.

Multiple Deals

After missing most of last season due to a hamstring tear, Wideman made a strong effort to prove he could bounce back from the injury. He’s looking forward to a fresh start with the Oilers, who have recently made some significant changes to both their roster and behind the bench. The team sent Ryan Strome to the New York Rangers in exchange for center Ryan Spooner. Edmonton also announced a recent coaching change when they fired head coach Todd McLellan and replaced him with Ken Hitchcock.
