Calgary Flames Sign 9 Players to PTO Contracts

The Calgary Flames have signed nine players to PTO over the course of the last week. These players are Jeff Glass, Philip Samuelsson, Viktor Svedberg, Ryan Sproul, Duncan Siemens, Justin Falk, Scott Sabourin, Justin Auger, and Gilbert Brule. They also signed Logan Shaw to a PTO as well.

Calgary Flames Signs Nine Players To PTO

The Flames have made a mark signing nine players to PTO contracts. The Flames are running a split training camp this year with half the squad going to China to play pre-season games against the Boston Bruins. The Flames also have a full pre-season schedule to play in North America. As a result, the team needed bodies. The Flames obviously don’t have the roster space to sign all or even a good number of these players, but if someone impresses, they could earn a job. They are also going to get the opportunity to show their value to 30 other NHL teams. After all, it was only a few years ago that Kris Versteeg spent his pre-season on a PTO with the Edmonton Oilers and signed with Calgary.

Goalie

Glass, 32, appeared in 15 games for the Chicago Blackhawks last year. He went 3-7-3 with a 3.36 goals-against-average and .898 save percentage.

Defence

Samuelsson, 27, has appeared in 13 NHL games, but none since 2015. The defenseman scored 21 points in 76 games with the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL last year.

Svedberg, 27, has four points in 27 NHL games, but none since 2016. The defenceman scored 24 points in 73 games with the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL last year.

Sproul, 24, scored one goal and four points in 16 games with the New York Rangers last season. He has put up seven points in 28 career NHL games.

Siemens, 25, is a former 11th overall pick. Last season, he put up one goal and two points in 16 games for the Colorado Avalanche. He has played 20 career NHL games.

Falk, 29, is a veteran of 269 career NHL games. He put up one goal and one assist in 46 games with the Buffalo Sabres last season.

Forwards

Sabourin, 27, has never played an NHL game. The AHL journeyman spent last season with the San Diego Gulls. He put up four goals, seven points and 80 penalty minutes in 44 AHL games.

Auger, 24, played his only two NHL games with the Los Angeles Kings last year and did not score a point. He also scored 25 points in 65 games with the AHL’s Ontario Reign.

Brule, 31, was the sixth overall pick of the 2005 NHL Draft. He has played 299 career NHL games but has been in Europe since 2014. He represented Canada at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics winning a Bronze Medal. Brule scored 35 points in 47 games with the Kunlun Red Star of the KHL last year.

The Logan Shaw news broke earlier in the week.  We covered it here. Last season, he scored four goals and 10 assists for 14 points in 72 games with the Anaheim Ducks and Montreal Canadiens.
