Former New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur is leaving his position as the assistant general manager of the St. Louis Blues. Brodeur has spent the last four years under Blues general manager Doug Armstrong. The Blues have not yet announced a replacement for Brodeur. Brodeur’s contract with the Blues expired in June.

Martin Brodeur Steps Down as Assistant GM

Over the past four years, Brodeur has spent time with the Blues as an assistant general manager and goaltending coach. Brodeur joined the team after playing seven games with the club during the 2014-15 season. The Blues made the playoffs in Broduer’s first three years with the club but missed the playoffs last season. In three of the past four years, the Blues have been in the top ten for goals against.

During his 22-year NHL career, Brodeur played for the St. Louis Blues and New Jersey Devils. He won 691 games while putting up 125 career shutouts. He has won the Jennings Trophy five times in his career along with four Venezia trophies. Brodeur led the Devils to three Stanley Cup Championships in his 21 years with the team. He is the league’s all-time leader for games won (691) and games played (1,266). Brodeur led Team Canada to Gold in 2002 and was a backup to Roberto Luongo in 2010. He was the co-general manager for Team Canada who won the World Championships in May.

A Return to Jersey?

With Brodeur leaving St. Louis there are rumours that he would return to New Jersey where it all began for him. It’s still unknown where Brodeur would fit in with the Devils management. The Devils hired Rick Kowalsky and Mike Grier as assistant coaches so it is likely that Brodeur could end up in a management position with the Devils.
