Former Winnipeg Jets Defenseman Toby Enstrom Signs with Modo in Sweden

Toby Enstrom

Unrestricted free agent Toby Enstrom has signed a one-year deal with Modo in the Swedish Hockey League. He will also be named Team Captain. The 33-year-old veteran defenseman has played eleven years in the National Hockey League. The Swede was drafted in the eighth round (239th overall) by the Winnipeg Jets franchise (then the Atlanta Thrashers) during the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and spent his entire NHL career with the club.

Modo Signs Defenseman Toby Enstrom

Enstrom made his NHL debut in 2007 at the age of 23 for the Thrashers. In his rookie season, the defenseman scored 38 points (five goals, 33 assists) in 82 games played. He finished sixth in the Calder Trophy voting that season as the League’s best rookie player. In 2011-12, when the Thrashers returned to Winnipeg and re-became the Jets, Enstrom played in 62 games, scoring six goals and notching 27 assists as well.

Enstrom has skated in a total of 719 regular season games, notching 54 goals and 254 assists (308 total points). His best season was in 2010-11 when he played in 72 games and tallied 51 points (10 goals, 41 helpers). This past season, Enstrom only played in 43 games, a season where he was plagued with injury, and managed to rack up six points (one goal, five assists).

Enstrom has played in a career total of 15 post-season games and has logged only one point (an assist that came in the 2015 postseason). He played 11 playoff games for the Jets last year but did not record a point.

With his new team, Enstrom will play more minutes and expected to lead the club. As long as he stays healthy, Enstrom is a good ally to have. His experience and leadership skills will be very useful in Modo’s locker room.
