Philadelphia Flyers Sean Couturier Re-Injures MCL

According to multiple reports Philadelphia Flyers center, Sean Couturier re-injured his MCL. The injury reportedly happened at the Boot Camp tournament in Quebec about two weeks ago. This is the same injury the Couturier suffered during last years Stanley Cup Playoffs. He is estimated to miss four to six weeks for recovery.

Sean Couturier Out Four to Six Weeks

Couturier has spent his entire seven-year career with the Flyers. He scored 101 career goals and added 166 career assists for 267 career points in 498 career games. Couturier has eight goals and five assists for 13 points in 24 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. He was originally drafted eighth overall in the 2011 NHL Draft by the Flyers.

Last season he racked up 31 goals and 45 assists for 76 points in 82 games. He also added 31 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 53.2 percent Corsi with a relative Corsi of 5.6 percent. He was nominated for the Selke Trophy. Couturier is going into the third year of a six-year, $26 million dollar contract that he signed in July 2015.

The Flyers First Line In Couturier’s Absence

Losing Couturier for any amount of time would be a huge loss for the Flyers. Last year he centred their top line and finished second in goals (31) and third in points (76). He also led the NHL in total goals on ice for with 142. The Flyers will most likely look to Claude Giroux to move over to center the first line in Couturiers’ absence. Training camp begins in three weeks, with pre-season play beginning September 16th. Couturier has yet to be ruled out for training camp.

The Flyers will also look for James van Riemsdyk to see time on the first line as well if Couturier is out. Van Riemsdyk was signed by the Flyers this season after spending the last six years with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Van Riemsdyk played his first three years of his career with the Flyers.
