The Arizona Coyotes announced they will retire Shane Doan‘s number 19 this year. The announcement came via Twitter. Doan will be the first Coyote to have his number raised to the rafters.
It’s official and it’s only fitting.

Arizona Coyotes To Retire Shane Doan’s Number
Shane Doan holds the Coyotes team records for gmaes played (1,540), goals (402), assists (570) and points (972). Drafted seventh overall in the 1995 draft, Doan played 21 seasons in the NHL, entirely with the Winnipeg/Arizona franchise. Doan served as captain of the Coyotes for 13 seasons right up to his retirement.
Doan twice represented the Coyotes at the NHL All-Star game, in 2004 and 2009. He won the King Clancey award for his community service in 2010 and the Mark Messier leadership award in 2012. Unfortunately for Doan, hockey’s ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup, eluded him. While Doan had seen playoff action on nine occasions throughout his career, the Coyotes only made the playoffs three times in the last 14 season’s.
The Halkirk Alberta native also represented Canada on numerous occasions. He appeared in six IIHF World Hockey Championships, winning gold twice and three silver medals. He won gold in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and appeared in the 2006 Olympics.

Despite these team shortcomings, Doan stuck with the Coyotes for his entire career. This loyalty has made him a legend in the market. He has done a lot to grow the game in Arizona. Coyotes President and CEO Ahron Cohen said, Shane Doan is Mr. Coyote and a Valley icon, No one has done more for the Coyotes or the game of hockey in Arizona than Shane. For the past 22 years, Shane has been an incredible ambassador for our franchise and has represented the Coyotes with class, dignity and professionalism. He has given his heart and soul to the Coyotes and is most deserving of this tremendous honor.”
In a touch of class by the Coyotes, Doan will have his number retired on February 24, against the Winnipeg Jets, the team that drafted him.
