The Winnipeg Jets have re-signed free agent forward Nic Petan to a one-year, two-way contract worth $874,000. This contract carries him through the 2018-19 season and he will be a restricted free agent again next summer.

Nic Petan Re-Signs With the Winnipeg Jets

In Petan, the Jets lock up a young and talented forward with increasing potential. Although on a deep Jets team last season, he has not had a great chance to showcase those talents. He scored only two goals for two points, this is partly due to only playing 15 NHL games. He also only added six minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 47.5 percent Corsi-For and a relative Corsi of -2.6. Those totals are lower compared to the 2016-17 season, where he scored one goal, but 12 assists for 13 points in 54 points.

Petan was originally drafted in the 2nd round, 43rd overall of the 20013 NHL draft by the Jets. Over his limited three-year NHL career the 22-year-old has put up five goals and 16 assists for 21 career points in 95 career NHL games.

Petan put up 15 goals and 52 points in 52 AHL games for the Manitoba Moose last season.

What This Means for the Future

With the new contract, Petan should hopefully get a better chance to make an impact in the NHL. Currently deemed fourth line/press-box material, with the right opportunity Petan should go far. The constant league movements for the young centre in past seasons inhibited him to be productive for the Jets.
