The New York Rangers re-signed restricted free agent centre Ryan Spooner to a _-year contract worth $8 million, or $4 million per season AAV. This contract carries him through the 2020 season.

Ryan Spooner Re-Signs With the New York Rangers

There was some late movement from the 26-year-old in the 2017-18 season. Over his seven-year NHL career, Spooner has primarily played for the Boston Bruins, being drafted by them in the 2nd round, 45th overall of the 2010 NHL draft. This changed when Spooner was traded to the New York Rangers as part of the Rick Nash trade at the NHL trade deadline.

So far, Spooner’s NHL career has been a slow burner putting up 41 goals and 101 assists for 141 career points in 273 career games. Spooner has added two points in four career Stanley Cup Playoff Games.

Last season, he scored 13 goals and 28 assists for 41 points over 59 games combined between the two clubs. He also added just four minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 48.1 % Corsi and a relative Corsi of -2.8. However, statistically, the young forward’s numbers did not match his performance in the latter part of last season.

What Ryan Spooner Means for the Future.

The Canadian centre will be a valid component to the Rangers rebuild. New York general manager Jeff Gorton looks to inject skill and intensity to their team after a disastrous run last season. By extending Spooner’s contact they aim to insert a “want to win” attitude and passion into the team that it has previously lacked. Spooner will give them an added boost in offensive productivity and will step up defensively when needed.  With new players coming into the fold, Spooner’s NHL experience (although limited) will be an advantage.
