The Boston Bruins have re-signed defenseman Matt Grzelcyk to a two-year deal worth $2.8 million with an AAV of 1.4 million per year. This deal carries him through the 2019-20 season. Upon turning heads in his rookie season, the Bruins decided to bring back the young defenseman.

Matt Grzelcyk Signs With Boston Bruins

Grzelyck spent his college career playing for Boston University. In four years with the Eagles, he posted 26 goals and 69 assists for 95 points in 125 games. In his last two seasons, he scored 10 goals in each. Both at the college and NHL level, Grzelcyk hasn’t been much of a scorer but has produced in other ways.

Grzelcyk has spent his entire two-year NHL career with the Boston Bruins. He has played in 63 career games, 61 of them coming this year. In those games, he has scored three goals and 12 assists.  He also added an assist in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He also added 22 of his 24 career penalty minutes this year. His possession numbers were 54.8 percent Corsi with a relative Corsi of 1.9 percent.

Grzelcyk was originally drafted in the third round, 85th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins.

What This Means For The Future

At 5’9 Grezelyck is starting to find a place in the NHL, playing 61 games this year with the Bruins. He is a small, top six defenseman at the moment for the Bruins, but could be another good young defenseman in Boston. Grezelyck spent this year playing on the second pairing alongside Kevan Miller.

Despite not getting any points on the man-advantage, Gretzelyck was part of Boston’s second power-play unit playing alongside Zdeno Chara. Getting valuable minutes like that on the power-play will help Grezelyck grow in the future and shows how much trust the Bruins have in the young defenseman.

Expect Gretzelyck to be a key part of the Bruins defensive core moving forward in the future.
