Domi is expected to get a contract extension from the Canadiens as part of the deal.

Arizona Coyotes Acquire Alex Galchenyuk

There’d been much speculation about Galchenyuk and his future. The Coyotes are making strides to improve their team and Alex Galchenyuk will be a big part of it.

Key Players

Alex Galchenyuk

In Galchenyuk the Coyotes receive a young goal scorer who posted 19 goals and 32 assists for 51 points in 82 games last season. He also added 22 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 49.3 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -1.5.

Those totals are similar to the previous year, where he scored 17 goals and 27 assists for 41 points in 61 games. His best season was in 2015-16 when he scored 30 goals and 26 assists for 56 points in 82 games.

He has put up 108 goals and 147 assists for 255 career points in 418 career games. Galchenyuk has spent all six of his NHL seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. He was originally drafted in the first round, third overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2012 NHL Draft.

“Alex is a skilled, productive forward who has scored 30 goals in this league. We’re excited to add another elite young player to our core group moving forward.” General Manager John Chayka said on acquiring Galchenyuk.

Max Domi

Domi scored nine goals and had 36 assists in 82 games this past season. He was disappointing in the first half of the season but saw his production pick up down the stretch. Overall, Domi has 36 goals and 99 assists in 222 career NHL games.

A first round pick by the Coyotes in 2013, Domi ranked third on the Coyotes with his 45 points. His career high is 52 points, a feat he reached in his rookie season.

Montreal is getting a young, but experienced player back in Domi, as he just finished the last year of his entry-level contract. Domi saw time at center this season, but excelled when moved back to wing. He tallied 24 points in his last 28 games.

What This Means For The Future

Trading Galchenyuk has been a topic all season for Montreal due to the team’s poor performance. He never had a solid role in Montreal as they kept switching him between center and wing during his time with the club. He had been a key part of the power-play this last year with the Canadiens and was among the team’s leading scorers. This trade gives the Coyotes yet another weapon to add to their arsenal.

Galchenyuk has two years remaining on his contract. It carries an AAV or cap hit of $4.9 million per season.
