The Ottawa Senators have extended pending free agent Magnus Paajarvi to a one-year contract with a cap hit of $900,000. This contract carries him through to the end of 2018-19 season.

Magnus Paajarvi Re-Signs With the Ottawa Senators.
Over his nine-year NHL career, Paajarvi was initially drafted in the 1rst round, 10th overall of the 2009 NHL draft by the Edmonton Oilers, then played primarily for St Louis Blues. This was until January this year, where the Swedish forward was picked up by the Senators on waivers. During his time with these teams has put up 51 goals and 54 assists for 105 career points in 387 career games.
Last season, between the Senators and the Blues, he scored eight goals and four assists for twelve points in 79 games. He also added relatively low 12 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were a bit below average at 46.0 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -1.8. This may reflect however the poor season on the Senators as a whole, as opposed to the wingers.
When general manager Pierre Dorion announced the signing today, on Paajarvi, he stated
“We’re happy to have Magnus back in Ottawa, He showed us last season that he can play the game with speed, which fits with the style of play we want our team to exhibit. Magnus is a versatile player who will be able to provide us productive minutes in many situations.”
What This Means for the Future of Paajarvi and the Sens.
Giving the 27-year-old a contract extension shows that his potential has not gone unnoticed. The Sens look to forget their disastrous 2017-18 season and start anew. This contract is likely because of the Swedish national success in the recent 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, where he tallied three goals in 10 games to help his country claim gold at the tournament.
