Breaking: The Carolina Hurricanes add Don Waddell as president and general manager. Waddell joined the Hurricanes organization in 2014 as the president of the club’s parent company, Gale Force Sports and Entertainment. This marks his second stint as a general manager. His first GM job was with the Atlanta Thrashers between 1998 and 2010. He was let go as the team relocated to Winnipeg to become the Winnipeg Jets 2.0.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Hurricanes will name Rod Brind’Amour as their new head coach. Financials and terms of the deal have not yet been announced.

Rod Brind’Amour to Become Next Head Coach of Hurricanes
Brind’Amour is replacing Bill Peters behind the bench as head coach. Peters recently took a job to become the head coach of the Calgary Flames. This will be Brind’Amours first head coaching job in the NHL.
Brind’Amour has been part of the Hurricanes organization for the last 18 years, the last ten as a part of the management team. He has spent the last seven years as an assistant coach of the Hurricanes after spending two years after he retired as head of forwards development.
Brind’Amour played for the St.Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers, and Carolina Hurricanes during his playing career. He served as captain of the Hurricanes from 2005 to 2010. During the 2009-2010 season, he split the captaincy role with Eric Staal. He also took the Canes to their only Stanley Cup Championship in 2006.
What Does This Mean For the Future
Hiring Brind’Amour is one of the many changes the Hurricanes have made so far this season. Some of the other moves involved terminating the contract of Ron Francis and announcing the Don Waddell will be the GM for the Hurricanes for the time being as they are not searching for a GM.
Brind’Amour has already spent the last seven years as an assistant coach behind the Canes bench and should be able to steer their ship in the right direction for next year. He is familiar with the organization and the front office. Under the new ownership, he has a fresh start to build a team in his image. The Hurricanes have missed the playoffs each of the last nine years. Their team has a lot of young and talented players like Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen who they will look to build their team around. Details of the deal to be announced soon.
