Edmonton Oilers Sign Mikko Koskinen

The Edmonton Oilers have signed goaltender Mikko Koskinen to a one-year contract. Financial details have not been released. The 29-year-old Finnish goaltender has spent the past four seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) as a member of SKA St. Petersburg. Koskinen was drafted 31st overall by the New York Islanders during the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

The 6’7″, 209-pound goaltender has only logged four games at the NHL level, all during the 2010-11 season as a member of the Islanders. In those games, he logged 208 minutes of ice time and allowed 15 goals, with a goals average against of 4.33 and a save percentage of .873. Koskinen also spent three seasons with the Islanders American Hockey League affiliate- the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. During those three seasons, Koskinen only played in 41 games with a GAA of 2.92 and a save percentage of .901%.

In the KHL, Koskinen has played in 186 games. In those games, he has notched a GAA of 2.00 and a save percentage of .925. Earlier in April, Koskinen made it known to the press that he was interested in bringing his talents back to North America and the NHL. With the Oilers, Koskinen will be filling in the role of backup goaltender. He has plenty of experience at all levels of play from around the world and is a seasoned veteran.

Koskinen is a two-time Gagarin Cup Champion in the KHL (the trophy awarded to KHL playoff champions) and a two-time Silver Medalist at the World Championships (representing Team Finland).
