The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that general manager Lou Lamoriello will not return to that role next season, but remains with the team as a senior advisor.

Lamiorello’s contract expired at the end of Toronto’s season.
Lou Lamoriello Not Returning as Maple Leafs GM Next Season
After three seasons as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Lou Lamoriello will not return to the role next season and will instead take on a new role as Senior Advisor to the management team.
In the three season that Lamoriello was general manager, the Maple Leafs went 118-95-33, making two playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018 after finishing dead last in the NHL in 2016. This past season the Maple Leafs set records for home wins and points.
It Was Always the Plan

With Lamoriello shifting to his new position as Senior Advisor, the search for a new general manager begins for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
New General Manager
The search for a new general manager is expected to be short and likely exclusively internal. Kyle Dubas, who has served as an assistant general manager with the Maple Leafs since July 22nd, 2014, is the favourite to be named general manager. Mark Hunter, who is also an assistant general manager with the Maple Leafs, is also in the conversation to become the Leafs new GM.
The Only Question Left Unanswered
With the departure of Lou Lamoriello, Leafs fans and media alike will be curious to see if his no facial hair policy in the regular season will live on with the team.
