Elliot Friedman of Sportsnet reported that the Carolina Hurricanes have no plans to hire a new general manager in the near future after negotiations fell through with Buffalo Sabres assistant general manager Steve Greely. Don Waddell will continue to serve as the interim general manager.

Don Waddell to Continue as General Manager
Don Waddell will continue to serve as the interim general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes after they couldn’t make a deal with Steve Greeley who is currently the assistant general manager of the Buffalo Sabres. Waddell was named the interim general manager after Ron Francis was named the president of hockey operations and was relieved of his duties as general manager. Francis was recently told that he could work from home.
Waddell’s Experience
Waddell was formally the assistant general manager for the Detroit Red Wings during the 1997-1998 season. After leaving the Red Wings he spent 13 years as general manager of the Atlanta Thrashers. He also spent a year taking over the presidential duties during the 2010-2011 season. Waddell was the only general manager for the Atlanta Thrashers during their 13 years in the NHL. He was the head coach for the Thrashers on two separate occasions. Wadell was the interim head coach during the 2002-2003 season and then took over mid-season for Bob Hartley during the 2008-2009 season. He was a scout for the Pittsburgh Penguins between 2011-2014. Waddell has spent the last four years as president of the Carolina Hurricanes.
He has spent time as part of Team USA. In 2004 he was the assistant general manager for Team USA during the World Cup of Hockey and The IIHF World Championships. The United States captured a bronze medal during the World Championships which qualified them for the 2006 Olympics. He served as general manager for the US Men’s national team in 2001 and 2002. In 2011, He was the head coach for Team USA in 2011 during the Deutschland Cup in Germany. The US failed to win a game during the Deutschland Cup and ended in the last place.
