Sergei Mozyakin, a forward of the Metallurg Magnitogorsk has reached an all-time landmark in the history of the Kontinental Hockey League. In the third game of the first round of the Gagarin Cup playoffs, Mozyakin, scored his 500th career goal. He did it when his team played against the Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg.
Sergei Mozyakin and the Historic Goal
With that goal, Sergei Mozyakin became first KHL player to score 500 goals in a career. To achieve this result, it took the 36-year-old forward 975 games. Out of 500 goals, Sergey Mozyakin scored 65 for CSKA, 171 for Khimik/Atlant, and 264 for Metallurg Magnitogorsk. 69 of his goals were in playoff games.
Seeing the 500th goal, the head coach of the Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, Vladimir Krikunov couldn’t help but exclaim: “We would like to have at least one half of Sergei Mozyakin! I’m not saying the full Mozyakin -I say a half of him would be more than enough for a win!”
A Record Machine
As a fact, in 2016, Mozyakin surpassed the record of Boris Mikhailov (428 goals) and became the greatest all-time and single-season high-scorer in the Kontinental Hockey League history. Also, in the previous season, he beat the record of Alexander Radulov in “Most Points in One Season by KHL Players”. Having 85 points that year.
Note that Sergei Mozyakin holds the KHL records in total points (1068), goals (500) and assists (568).
Add to this his recent Olympic Gold medal and we have an exemplary future KHL Hall-Of-Famer.
Who knows, should he stay in Val d’Or and eventually signed with Columbus Blue Jackets, what results could he achieve at the NHL level.
Like father, like son
On the other hand, we know exactly, that the 36-year-old forward has a dream of his life, related directly to the Kontinental Hockey League. He wants to finish his career by playing for the Metallurg Magnitogorsk together with his son Andrey.
Andrey Mozyakin was born in May 2001, this May he will be 17 years old. By the time the contract of his father expires, he will be almost 19. That means, there are no age-related obstacles for the historical match.
Although, Mozyakin Jr. does not stand out among his teammates. In the MHL, he hadn’t played a single match for his club, named “Steel foxes “. With such performances it is very unlikely, that Andrey Mozyakin will earn a place in the regular Metallurg roster. In the National Hockey League, Alex Ovechkin is still two goals shy in his pursuit of 600 goals. That achievement would make him the 20th NHL player to reach that landmark.
