The Pittsburgh Penguins re-sign veteran Patric Hornqvist to a five-year contract worth $26.5 million, working out at $5.3million per season. This contract carries the 31-year-old through to the 2022-23 season.
Patric Hornqvist To Stay In Pittsburgh
Hornqvist's contract is going to be five years, $5.3 million per year according to people in the organization. Sounds about right. Time to win is the next three years or so. Simply not someone you let leave.

Patric Hornqvist Re-Signs With The Penguins
Over his 10-year NHL career, Hornqvist has played for the Nashville Predators and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has put up 191 goals and 203 assists for 394 career points in 630 career games during this time. He was originally drafted in the 7th round, 230th overall of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by Nashville.
So far this season he has scored 17 goals and 15 assists for 32 points. He also added 44 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are a decent 54.2 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 1.9.
GM Jim Rutherford stated on the trade: “This shows what the organization and I think of Patric to get it done sooner rather than later,” he said. “I felt that it was important that he knows and we know that he’s going to be here going forward.”
What This Means for the Future
With this extension, the Penguins secure their “heart and soul” for the next few seasons. There were deadline fears that the Penguins would not be able to afford the Swedish forward amidst the Derick Brassard trade.
Hornqvist has been a steady contributor for the Pens, particularly making an impact in the Pens effective power-play unit. He is currently second on the team for power-play goals, three goals shy of Evgeni Malkin. This news is welcomed as Hornqvist has just returned from a lower-body injury that has kept him from the last eight games.
With The Metropolitan Division so competitive, its vital for dependable players like Hornqvist to continue to perform in their roles to secure wins coming into playoffs. Although it remains to be seen if he will continue to perform at the same standard for the years to come.
The Penguins next game is against the New York Devils Tuesday night.
