Edmonton Oilers Trade Patrick Maroon to New Jersey Devils

Amidst rumors of Maroon being dealt, the Oilers found a trading partner. They have sent Maroon to the Devils in return for a third round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft and a prospect.

Patrick Maroon

In Maroon, the New Jersey Devils get a power forward, and 20 goal scorer who has found a place playing with arguably the best player in the world, Connor McDavid. This season he scored 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points in 57 games. He also added 60 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 54 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 2.8.

Those totals are about equal compared to this time last season, where he scored 27 goals, 15 assists for 43 points. Over his six-year NHL career, Maroon has played for the Anaheim Ducks and the Oilers. He has put up 75 goals and 90 assists for 165 career points in 358 career games. He was originally drafted in the sixth round, 161st overall at the 2007 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers.

What This Means for the Future

Maroon is a power forward who uses his size and strength to manhandle his opposition. He came into his own in the 2016-17 season. Maroon has good hands and the ability to finish plays close to the net. While he’s not a speedster, he can skate, and kept up with the play on a line with Connor McDavid where he scored a career-high 27 goals.

Maroon is a solid two-way player and has a knack for killing penalties. He also adds size and toughness to his new club, but he does have a knack for taking unnecessary penalties. The Devils are hoping he can add some discipline to his game.
