Edmonton Oilers Place Cam Talbot on Injured Reserve

The Edmonton Oilers have placed number one goaltender Cam Talbot on injured reserve. Talbot has an upper-body injury that will reportedly have him out for at least three weeks. The three week timetable could end up being longer.

Talbot, 30, suffered the injury on Tuesday night. His status was uncertain heading into today, but the worst-case scenario has occurred. This upper-body injury will keep him out for three weeks, and possibly even longer than that.

Per SportsNet’s Chris Johnston, Oilers head coach Todd McLellan said this on the timetable being three weeks, “It could be longer.”

The earliest that Talbot is eligible to come off the injured reserve is December 5th, but that is looking unlikely. This will force the Oilers to turn to Laurent Brossoit on a full time basis to stand between the pipes.

Talbot’s situtation is adding insult to injury. Coming off a career year last season in which he went 42-22-8 with a 2.39 goals-against-average and a .919 save percentage, he has struggled this season. So far he has a record of 10-10-1 to go along with his 3.00 goals-against-average and his .903 save percentage.

His season in 2017-18 is well below his career averages of a 2.39 goals-against-average and a .920 save percentage.

As for Brossoit, the Oilers will be hoping the 24-year-old can improve on his play so far this season. So far Brossoit has yet to win a game, going 0-3-1. He has a 3.31 goals-against-average and an .881 save percentage as well. This leaves for little optimism that the Oilers will turn around their misfortunes anytime soon.

As for the backup situation, the Oilers have recalled Nick Ellis from their AHL-affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Ellis, 23, has never made a start at the NHL level. He is currently 5-5-0 with a 2.82 goals-against-average and a .914 save percentage for Bakersfield this season.
