Matt Murray Week-to-Week With Lower Body Injury

The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without starting goaltender Matt Murray for a few weeks as head coach Mike Sullivan announced today that he’s week-to-week with a lower-body injury. The injury happened last night against the Philadelphia Flyers when Jakub Voracek slid into him on a breakaway. Murray’s leg looked like it bent a weird way and he couldn’t put any weight on his right skate as he left the ice.

Bob McKenzie of TSN reported before Mike Sullivan gave an update that it’ll likely be a two-to-four week injury:

It’s an undesirable positive for the Penguins, as it could’ve been a lot worse for Murray. With Murray down, the Penguins will turn to Tristan Jarry as he’s looked stellar when playing just a few games. He allowed two goals in relief last night but before that, he had a great outing against the Lightning on Saturday. He stopped 33 of 35 shots which was good for a .943 save percentage and on top of it, earned his first NHL win. One of his saves that game ended up being this spectacular one:

Before Matt Murray went down, He was 11-7-1 in 19 games that he finished and has a .906 save percentage which is the lowest it’s been through his young career. Take out the Blackhawks game where he relieved Antti Niemi and gave up six goals, it looks a little better. Before he got injured last night, he stopped 20 of 22 shots which was good for a .909 save percentage.

It doesn’t seem like general manager Jim Rutherford will be acquiring a backup goaltender to Jarry for these next few weeks according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

This means that Casey Desmith will be Jarry’s backup for the foreseeable future unless they make a move.
