David Backes Returns to Boston Bruins Practice

David Backes

Forward David Backes returned to practice for the Boston Bruins on Monday, earlier than anticipated while recovering from surgery. He is still wearing a red no-contact jersey and has no anticipated timetable for his return. It was also announced on Tuesday that Brad Marchand and Torey Krug, who both missed time on the Bruins’ California road trip, will still be out for Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils. When approached for comments, coach Bruce Cassidy spoke about a possible return for Ryan Spooner, as well as the controversial topic of goaltenders.

David Backes Returns Early

Backes, who missed 14 of the Bruins’ 19 games this season with complications from diverticulitis, had colon surgery on November 2nd. His prognosis was originally for eight weeks, but the 33-year-old was able to return to the ice in a limited capacity after only two and a half weeks. Backes praised the team’s performance on the recent road trip, and was glad to be back with them. Doctors advised him that as long as he was not in pain, he could return to skating. He can slowly increase his physical activity as he is able. Marchand, Krug, and Spooner, and rookie Anders Bjork, are also still on the list of injuries. Adam McQuaid, who is still recovering from a broken leg, has no anticipated return date.

Goalie Tandem Issues Continue to Plague Bruins

One of the main issues affecting the Bruins performance has been goaltending. Former Vezina winner Tuukka Rask has faced adversity in net this season, often playing behind an injured team, and his statistics have suffered. He currently has a record of 3-7-2 despite a fairly average performance. Backup goalie Anton Khudobin has fared better this season, currently undefeated in regulation. Coach Cassidy, when asked about the performances of both, commented that the team will continue to ride Khudobin’s streak. He made sure to add that they will be using both goalies in tandem so that neither is over-worked.
