Mikko Koivu Agrees to Two Year Contract Extension with Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild have re-signed forward and captain Mikko Koivu to a two-year contract extension worth $11 million beginning in the 2018-19 season. The average annual value is $5.5 million. His salary cap hit this season will be $6.75 million.

Koivu, 34, is heading into his 13th season in the National Hockey League. It is also his 13th season as a member of the Wild. Koivu was drafted by Minnesota sixth overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Last season, Koivu skated in a total of 80 games, scoring 18 goals and adding 40 assists. In the playoffs, he played in five games, tallying two total points- a goal and an assist. He was also a finalist for the Selke Trophy, which is awarded to the best defensive forward in the League. Koivu has been the captain of the Wild for eight years, being chosen in October of 2009.

Koivu leads the Wild’s all-time lists in games played (843), assists tallied (435) and points scored (614). He also leads Minnesota in most playoff games played with 50 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. As for international play, Koivu has played in a grand total of 14 international tournaments. He was also captain of Team Finland at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Koivu has a Silver Medal from the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics as well as a Bronze Medal from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. He was also a member of the Silver Medal winning 2004 Finnish World Cup of Hockey Team and a Gold (2011), two Silvers (2007 and 2016), and two Bronze Medals (2006 and 2008) from various World Championship tournaments.

In a total of 843 career games played, Koivu has scored 179 goals and has added 435 assists. As for his career playoff numbers- Koivu has played in 50 Stanley Cup Playoff games, scoring 11 goals and notching 13 helpers for 24 career playoff points.
