Travis Zajac Out 4-6 Months After Surgey on Torn Pectoral Muscle

The New Jersey Devils have been handed some bad news as centerman Travis Zajac will be out 4-6 months after surgery. Zajac underwent surgery to fix a torn pectoral muscle that was a result of off-season training last week.

Zajac, 32, has proven to be an important piece of the Devils depth at the center position. And with using the first overall pick of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft on Nico Hischier, the once weaker depth now looked set to be a resolved issue.

As part of the statement from the Devils organization, executive vice president/general manager Ray Shero said,

“This morning, Travis Zajac underwent successful surgery to repair a torn left pectoral muscle that was suffered last week during off-season training. The procedure was performed by the club’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow. Zajac’s expected recovery time is approximately four to six months.”

Zajac has spent his entire 779-game NHL career with the New Jersey Devils after being selected 20th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Since coming to New Jersey he has racked up a total of 155 goals and 280 assists during the regular season.

Zajac’s 155 career goals for the Devils organization has him sitting at eighth all-time in franchis history, only 11 goals behind Petr Sykora. His 280 assists with the Devils ranks ninth all-time in franchise history, only three behind Aaron Broten. His 435 career points also rank seventh all-time in Devils history, only 37 behind Bobby Holik and 41 behind Scott Neidermayer.

While Zajac has never been an elite point producer, he has proven throughout his career to be a reliable forward. He has hit the 40-plus point mark in seven seasons with the Devils, breaking the 60-point mark twice as well in 2008-09 and 2009-10 respectively.

His influence goes beyond his play on the ice, as Zajac also wears an ‘A’ on his jersey.
