During the 2016-2017 season, Oleksiak scored five goals and added two assists for a total of seven points in 41 games. He also had 37 penalty minutes. Oleksiak’s five goals were a career high and were third best amongst Stars defencemen. Oleksiak attended Northeastern University in Boston before deciding to return to the Canadian Hockey League to further develop his skills. He played in the Ontario Hockey League for the Saginaw Spirit in 2011. During that same year, he would be traded to the Niagara IceDogs.  Later that season, Oleksiak signed a three-year entry level contract wit the Stars. He also played for Canada at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championships, coming home with a bronze medal.

Oleksiak, 24, was a 1st round pick, 14th overall, in the 2011 NHL Draft for Dallas. He has spent his entire career in the Stars organization, bouncing between the AHL and NHL club. He will go into training camp looking to solidify a spot in the top six, and earn a full season with the NHL team.

According to capfriendly, the Stars are $196,355 over the NHL salary cap, with 24 players on the roster.  Once final cuts are made, they should have a small amount of cap space.
