The Boston Bruins have re-signed center Ryan Spooner to a one-year, $2.825 million contract. The deal was made as the two sides avoid arbitration.

Ryan Spooner was selected 25th overall in the 2010 NHL entry draft, and led the AHL’s Providence Bruins with 57 points in his first full season (2012-13). His NHL debut proved uneventful, but returning to the team for 23 games in the following season, he earned 11 points. He played his first full season with Boston in the 2015-16 season, netting 13 goals as well as 36 assists for 49 points in 80 games played.

The 25-year-old Ottawa native earned 39 points in 78 games played in the 2016-17 season. 18 of those points were earned on the power play.  He missed three games in March to a concussion. Spooner returned to score an assist in Boston’s 5-2 road win over the Calgary Flames. He finished the regular season fifth among forwards in points.

Spooner also made his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut this season in Boston’s series against Ottawa. He earned two points while playing in the first four games of the six-game series.

His career has not been without controversy. After Boston fired long-serving head coach Claude Julien in February, Spooner commented to the press “I… don’t really think that he liked me as a player.” This was only a few weeks after saying that Julien “just wanted [him] to be the best player that [he] can be.” Whether this is true or not, Spooner was only able to score 12 points under new coach Bruce Cassidy.

His previous two-year contract, signed in 2015, was worth $1.9 million a year. It was announced on June 27th that the team had extended a qualifying offer to Spooner, as well as fellow restricted free agents Malcolm Subban, Tim Schaller, David Pastrnak, Noel Acciari, Austin Czarnik and Zane McIntyre. Defenseman Joe Morrow was not given an offer, and has become an unrestricted free agent. He signed with the Montreal Canadiens.
