The Pittsburgh Penguins re-sign defenseman Brian Dumoulin in a six-year deal with an average annual value of $4.1million. Dumoulin is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion with the Penguins.
Pittsburgh Penguins Re-Sign Brian Dumoulin
Dumoulin will continue to sport black and gold for his fifth year in the NHL. The 6’5″, 207 pound defenseman had career highs of 16 and 15 assists in 2015-16 and 2016-17 respectively. He also earned six points in the Penguins’ most recent successful Stanley Cup campaign.
Drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes (2nd round, 51st overall) in the 2009 NHL Draft, Dumoulin was traded along with Brandon Sutter and the 8th overall pick to the Penguins in exchange for center Jordan Staal at the 2012 NHL Draft. 2013 brought his NHL debut and his first NHL point against the Toronto Maple Leafs against goaltender Jonathan Bernier.
Heralded as the Penguins’ best shutdown defender, the 25-year-old has been stacking on minutes. Last season, Dumoulin averaged over 20 minutes of ice time and with his re-signing, experts expect that number to climb. His physicality has allowed the Penguins blue line to grind deep into the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs, especially with teammates like Trevor Daley, and Kris Letang out with injury. While strong, Dumoulin stays out of the box with only 14 regular season penalty minutes and just six more in the playoffs in 2016-17. He only has 34 penalty minutes in his career.
The Biddeford, Maine, Dumoulin attended Boston College playing in the first division. He was with the Boston College Eagles when they won the NCAA Championship in Tampa, Florida in 2012. Dumoulin also earned a bronze medal in 2011 at the World Junior Championship representing the United States.
In 163 NHL games played, Dumoulin has earned 33 points, including two goals and 31 assists.
