New York Islanders Re-Sign Adam Pelech for Four Years

The New York Islanders have re-signed defenseman Adam Pelech on Monday. He inks a four-year deal. While the team did not disclose the numbers, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports his contract is for $6.4 million. It will carry a $1.6 million AAV or cap hit per year. The 22-year-old defenseman should become a key part of the Islanders defense.

Last season the 6’3” 215 pound Pelech put up three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 44 games. He added six penalty minutes. He also played in 13 AHL games as well in 2016-17 and scored one goal and added four assists for five points with 10 penalty minutes. Over his career he has played in 53 NHL games. Pelech has put up three goals and nine assists for 12 points in his career. And in 105 AHL games, he has scored three goals with 20 assists for 23 points and 64 penalty minutes.

With top pairing defenseman Travis Hamonic now gone to Calgary, Pelech will see an increase in time on ice for the Islanders. He should play in an important defensive role for the team. Islanders GM Garth Snow had this to say about the young defenseman.

“Adam has proven at a very young age that he’s capable of playing an important defensive role on our team,” Islanders president and GM Garth Snow said in a release. “He will be an important piece of our defensive core moving forward and I’m excited to watch him continue to develop at the NHL level.”  Via Sportsnet

Pelech was selected 65th overall in the third round of the 2012 NHL draft. He had a solid career in the OHL with the Erie Otters. During his four seasons with the club, Adam put up 20 goals and added 107 assists for 127 points in 228 games. Two years before he was drafted in 2010-11, Pelech won a U-17 World Hockey Championship Gold Medal for Canada. The following year he would win a Gold Medal yet again in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
