Brandon Pirri Signs with ZSC Lions in Swiss League

Former New York Rangers forward Brandon Pirri has signed a one-year deal with the ZSC Lions in the Swiss NLA. Pirri, who was signed in the summer of 2016 by the Rangers, did not have a large enough impact for him to be re-signed by the team. Players like Michael Grabner and Kevin Hayes emerged and had great seasons to make Pirri not as valuable as he could be. The Rangers declined to qualify Pirri and he could not find an NHL contract. He is hoping that a good season in Europe could lead to a new NHL deal next summer.

Pirri only scored eight goals goals and tens assists this season on a Rangers offense which has been quite explosive and deadly, an offense which Pirri could have flourished with. Now that he is a member of the ZSC Lions, he will be looking to get his game back on track and earn himself a new contract.

The Toronto, Ontario native was drafted 59th overall in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks where he remained until the 2013-14 season, where he was then traded to the Florida Panthers. After a brief stint in Florida, he was traded to the Ducks last season, where he couldn’t get anything going before being sent to free agency and then picked up by New York. His career totals include 226 games played, 57 goals and 41 assists.

Pirri struggled for the Rangers after the Holiday Break, hitting an unfortunate slump which eventually lead to him being scratched for six consecutive games in February. He has struggled to be dependable and find the back of the net.
