The Carolina Hurricanes announced that they have re-signed defensemen Jaccob Slavin to a seven-year contract extension.

Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign Jaccob Slavin
The contract is worth $37.1 million, with an annual average value of $5.3 million. The 23-year-old Slavin was a fourth round selection of the Hurricanes in 2012 and has played 145 games in the NHL.
In those 145 games, Slavin produced seven goals and 54 points. Slavin emerged as an important member of the young Hurricanes core last season. Hurricanes General Manager Ron Francis stated re-signing Slavin was a top priority:
“Jaccob is one of the cornerstones of our team moving forward, and it was important to secure him with our organization long term,” Francis said. “We believe he is one of the top young defensemen in the NHL today, and are thrilled that he and his wife, Kylie, have made their home in Raleigh.”
Slavin had a break-out year in his second full season in the NHL, his first playing all 82 games. He scored five goals and 34 points, while leading the team in overall (23:26) and short-handed (3:06) ice time per game. His 53.34% Corsi-for percentage ranked 20th among all defencemen in the league that played a minimum of 1000 minutes. His 59.29% on-ice goals-for percentage also ranked in the top 20, sitting 14th among blueliners.
Prior to turning professional, Slavin played three seasons with the Chicago Steel of the USHL. He scored nine goals and 64 points in 139 games.
After being drafted by the Hurricanes, Slavin enrolled at Colorado College. He excelled in his rookie season. He netted five goals and 25 points in 32 games for the Tigers. Because of his outstanding play, he was named the NCHC all rookie team and named rookie of the year. He was also selected to the all conference second team.
Slavin will be looked at as a rock on the blueline for years to come, and when Carolina starts to contend and contract amounts rise, this deal may become a steal quite quickly.
