Philadelphia Flyers Re-Sign Forward Scott Laughton

The Philadelphia Flyers have re-signed forward Scott Laughton to a new two-year deal Tuesday worth $1.925M with an annual average of $962,500. The 23-year-old Laughton was selected 20th overall in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and has played 109 games so far in the NHL.

During those 109 games, Laughton has only managed nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points along with 51 penalty minutes. This is a small production number given he was a first round selection. However, due to the way Philly has worked their system, it has been hard for Laughton to stay with the big team, meaning he has also spent some time down in the AHL.

Minors and Juniors

While in the AHL, Laughton has played a total of 105 games. He put up 34 goals and 35 assists for 69 points to go with 71 penalty minutes. This season, with the way Philly is turning things around, expect him to play a full-time role in 2017-18. He already has leadership abilities and plays a strong two-way game. This is something the Flyers could use full-time in their lineup.

After tearing up the OHL with the Oshawa Generals, where Laughton scored 219 points (96 goals and 123 assists) in 230 games, it was obvious he would go in the first round in a weak 2012 draft class. Also, his play internationally helped his ranking a lot with a gold medal in the U17 World Hockey Championships in 2010-11, a bronze medal in the U18 World Junior Championships in 2011-12, and a gold medal in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Appearing in the CHL Top Prospects Game that year did not hurt either. The deal is great for the Flyers. It is low risk with a small cap hit, and Laughton could potentially have a solid breakout season.
