As we hit mid-July, NHL clubs have shifted their focus from big targets to depth. Although Jaromir Jagr, Thomas Vanek, and many others are still available, general managers are beginning to focus in on their AHL affiliates for the upcoming season. The Minnesota Wild and Winnipeg Jets were two teams on Monday who began to fill out their minor league rosters.

Minnesota

The Wild have re-signed goaltender Steve Michalek to a one-year, two-way contract that pays him $715,000 in the NHL and $70,000 with the Iowa Wild of the AHL in 2017-18.

Michalek was drafted in the sixth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Wild. The native of Hartford, Connecticut played three seasons for the Harvard Crimson before signing an entry-level contract in 2015. Last year, the 23-year old netminder posted a 2.63 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage in 30 appearances in his first full year with Iowa.

The Wild have also brought back forward Zack Mitchell on a one-year, two-way contract worth $660,000 in the NHL and $70,000 in the AHL.

Mitchell was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014 by the Wild. After five seasons with the Guelph Storm, he joined the Iowa Wild, where Mitchell has spent nearly all of his professional career. Last year, the Orangeville, Ontario native played 62 games for Iowa, recording 22 points. He also made his NHL debut, playing 11 games with Minnesota. The 24-year old has yet to score his first career point.

Winnipeg

Forward Brandon Tanev has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Winnipeg Jets. The 25-year old was a restricted free agent.

Tanev was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Providence College by the Jets in 2016. The native Toronto appeared in 51 games with Winnipeg last season, recording just four points. Additionally, he scored nine points in 23 games with the Manitoba Moose in the AHL. He will likely serve as a depth, bottom six piece for the Jets and the Moose in 2017-18.
