Florida Panthers Re-Sign Mark Pysyk

The Florida Panthers have re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Mark Pysyk to a three-year contract with an AAV of $2.733 million. Pysyk spent the 2016-17 season with the Panthers, the first since arriving from Buffalo.

Pysyk, 25, hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations set on him after being taken in the first round, 23rd overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Since being selected 23rd overall by his first team, the Buffalo Sabres, he has only played in 207 NHL games, and 82 of them came last season with the Panthers.

In his time with Buffalo Pysyk played in 125 games, scoring five goals and adding 21 assists to his total. While Pysyk isn’t a player that will ever contribute much to the offensive end of the ice, he was able to prove himself in South Florida, playing in all 82 games for the Panthers in his first season there.

Before being drafted in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft he played in the WHL with the Edmonton Oil Kings. In five seasons with the Oil Kings he played in 243 games, scoring 25 goals and adding 100 assists to go along with his 253 penalty minutes he racked up.

Pysyk spent the other half of his time with the Sabres organization playing in the AHL with the Rochester Americans. During his 125 games with the Americans he had eight goals, 40 assists, and 82 penalty minutes. His best season in the AHL, in regards to point production, came in his first season when he had four goals and 14 assists.

The one thing that can really show just how effective Pysyk is on the ice is an analytic. Looking at the Relative Corsi-For percentage of Pysyk (1.55), he was the second best defenseman on the Panthers last season, second only to Aaron Ekblad (1.98).

Mark Pysyk is coming off a two-year, $2.25 million contract he originally signed with the Buffalo Sabres before the 2015-16 season.
