Stone joined the Flames on February 20th, 2017 in exchange for a 2017 third-round draft pick and conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2018. Flames general manager, Brad Treliving stated that Stone was a good fit for the Flames in an early post-season interview with SportsNet.

He was originally drafted by the then-Phoenix Coyotes in the third round, 69th overall of the 2008 NHL draft. His brother Mark Stone is a winger with the Ottawa Senators.
